Light for Education’ (LFE) program for students in rural areas of India, with the objective of providing them safe and bright lighting for study. “Light for Education” (LFE) is an innovative program where a central solar charging station is installed in the school and each student is provided with a high quality Solar LED study light. The students carry a portable battery to school every day for charging, which they can use for studying in the evening or at night. Several villages in Rajasthan and UP and also many parts of India, either don’t have access to grid electricity or a very poor supply. For any student, the most valuable study time is typically late in the evening or at night, in his/her home. It is during this time students may do their homework and revise chapters taught in the school. But unfortunately, many rural communities don’t have access to something as basic as minimal lighting to meet their needs, either because of the absence of grid infrastructure or because of unreliable supply. Students belonging to such communities are forced to use kerosene lamps or candles – which are poor, costly, dangerous and unhealthy energy sources. The small, makeshift lanterns or chimneys, made from glass bottles, produce a high amount of smoke that is known to cause respiratory problems and irritation in the eyes. Consequently, the impact on a child education is highly detrimental. In such contexts, many teachers quote that the most common excuse given by students for not completing their homework is lack of proper study light at home. ‘Light for Education’ initiative aims to address these problems and provides safe and bright light for students.
